Chapter Eleven
IT WASN’T THE MOST complicated scheme Simon had ever set up, not by a long shot. But he found himself worrying about it anyway. He had a story figured out, a way to take all the blame on himself instead of letting Tristan get hurt, and it was close enough to the truth that he knew it would be believed. He’d become obsessed, he wanted Tristan for himself, he couldn’t stand the thought of anyone else touching him, so he’d gone to great lengths. He’d betrayed the Chens, which meant he’d betrayed his own family, since his uncle wanted him to stay close with the Chens. It was all on him, all because of his selfish, unnatural desires. Tristan hadn’t even known about it. That was what he’d say if he got caught.
So it was only his own life he was playing with, in a way. But in another way? If the plan didn’t work, Tristan would be stuck with the Chens. And that clearly wasn’t an acceptable situation.
Which meant Simon had to make things different. He called in favors, activated hidden contacts he’d spent years cultivating, and with every person he spoke to, he was aware that he was adding to the likelihood that he’d be caught. Every person who had a piece of the puzzle was one more person who might speak to the Chens.
If he’d been willing to take things a little slower, he could have been more careful. But he kept remembering Tristan’s face when he’d said he could keep working if he had to. The determination, covering the reluctance. Tristan didn’t want to work for the Chens, not even for one night. And that meant Simon didn’t want him to, either.
His investigations told him the boys usually got at least one night off after working one of the parties, longer if they needed more healing time. He tried not to think about that second part, or about the tired, hopeless expression on the face of the whore who shared that information with him.
He learned that bookings were mostly handled online, and spent the better part of an afternoon pacing restlessly around the apartment of a hacker he’d kept out of jail with a few well-placed bribes a couple years earlier. The Chens’ system wasn’t that sophisticated and would be easy to shut down, but that wasn’t what Simon wanted, and what he did want required a little subtlety. So he waited, and he paced. And when he saw the opportunity, he had the hacker make a little change in the scheduling.
It wasn’t that hard to find the men with the firemen outfits, and the call to the press was completely simple. He just hoped Tristan had meant it when he’d said he wouldn’t mind if his picture made it into the tabloids.
